マッククローンの弱みはノイズ？

出回ってきた Psystar マッククローンの実機テストを早速 Engadget が公開した。さすがに Engadget は早い！
どうやらマッククローンには騒音という伏兵があったようだ。

「ものすごくうるさい。OS Xからファンを制御できていないらしく、低負荷の状況でも全開でファンが回りっぱなし。動画ではあまり分かりませんが、起動中のOpen Computerのそばでは電話が困難になるくらいの騒音。」［Ittousai 訳］
“It’s LOUD. Crazy loud. OS X doesn’t seem to interface with the fan controller, so it runs at full tilt all the time. It doesn’t really come across on the video, but it’s loud enough so that it’s hard to talk on the phone when the machine is running. There’s no way we could deal with this thing on a daily basis.”

マックのインテル移行に際してアップルはデベロッパ用にインテルマシンを準備していたらしい。
2005 年の「デベロッパ用移行キット」（DTK：Developer Transition Kits）と呼ばれるもので、インテルベースの PC ハードウェアを Power Mac のケースに入れたもの。PowerPC からインテルプロセッサに移行する作業に使ったデベロッパ専用のマシンだという。
… my friend Cabel Sasser emailed with a story, including documentary video footage, regarding Apple’s 2005 Developer Transition Kits — Intel-based PC hardware housed in Power Mac cases intended solely for use by developers during Apple’s transition from PowerPC to Intel processors.

この記事には、スイッチを入れるとけたたましい騒音をたてる DTK マシンのビデオが添えられている。これは必見、必聴だ。

騒音テスト用に DTK マシンを送ってくれるよう手配した Hockenberry が John Gruber に語ったということばが印象的だ。
「通常の PC POS ハードウェアを使っていると思われるから」［うるさいだろうというのだ］。
Concerned that the Developer Transition Kit machines would be noisy (as Hockenberry told me, he “fully expected it to be the normal PC POS hardware“), he asked the Panic crew — who received one of the first DTK machines sent to third-party developers — about fan noise.
PC パーツを使ったクローンマシンにとってノイズは宿命ということか・・・

Psystar のマッククローンが Leopard で起動するところだというビデオ。スイッチをいれたときのファンの音に注意。まるで電気掃除機みたいな音だ。

動いてる！ 読者の Whiskeyfrown こと Patrick は、幸運なことにやっと出たばかりの数少ない Psystar の Open Computing マシンを使ってみることが出来た。そのビデオを撮って送ってくれた。（モニターへの接続状態も写っておりインチキではない。）Patrick の話では、コイツはちゃんと起動して、スゴく速いそうだ。ただし、ソフトウェアアップデートは認識しないので、パッチを当てることはできない。システムプロファイラはこのマシンを Mac Pro だと思っている。のちほど写真を掲載する予定。［Patrick ありがとう。］
It’s alive. Reader Patrick (Whiskeyfrown) is lucky enough to be using one of the few Psystar Open Computing machines that have made it into the wild, and he was generous enough to make a video showing the machine (including the connections in the back to the monitor to show that it’s legit). The thing boots up and runs pretty damn fast, says Patrick, but Software Update won’t recognize it so you won’t be able to patch. System Profiler thinks that it’s a Mac Pro. More images coming soon. iPhone Clones

Meizu’s M8 copy of the iPhone will take even more direct cues from the Apple device with its interface, according to an update from the Chinese company’s chief, Jack Wong.
… The M8 is not expected to leave its home country due to stricter copyright laws in other countries.
