Leona Lewis はほんの数週間前、The Oprah Winfrey Show で彼女のヒット曲 Bleeding Love を披露したばかりだった。ショーのホストの Oprah Winfrey はいったものだ。「ワオ！　スター誕生っていうけど、あんたはホンモノだわ！」

A couple of weeks ago, Leona Lewis had just finished her hit Bleeding Love on The Oprah Winfrey Show when the host exclaimed, “Wow! Talk about a star is born. You’re the real deal, girl.”

オーディション番組 X-Factor

タレント発掘オーディション番組 X-Factor（American Idol の英国版）で優勝した２２才の歌姫（Whitney Houston によく比較される）の才能に感銘したのは Winfrey だけではなかった。両番組の審査員を務める Simon Cowell も、RCA Music Group 会長の Clive Davis もそうだった。Davis が監修した彼女のアルバム Spirit はアメリカでは４月８日に発売されるが、英国では史上最大のベストセラーとしてデビューを飾っている。

Winfrey isn’t the only one convinced by the 22-year-old former X-Factor winner (American Idol’s British cousin), who has drawn comparisons to Whitney Houston. Simon Cowell, who judges both shows, and RCA Music Group chairman Clive Davis are overseeing her album, Spirit, which arrives April 8 in the USA and is already the biggest-selling debut in British history.

The singer, who didn’t think she’d survive the X-Factor auditions, found that her days as a receptionist and pizza-parlor waitress were over. “I kept getting further and further along. I was like, ‘Omigosh.’ “

「勝ち残るとすぐに世界が変わった。それまでパートタイムで音楽をやっていたのに、こんな大事（おおごと）になったのが一番の変化かしら・・・」

“Things came so quickly when I won,” Lewis says. “Going from doing music part time to doing it on this big scale was a major change.”

「たくさんのショーに出ると、みんなは急いでアルバムを出そうとする。私は Cowell にいったの。自分はそうしたくはないって・・・。彼はそれを分ってくれた。」

“With a lot of these shows, people rush out an album after they win,” Lewis says. “I told (Cowell) I didn’t want to, and he was really supportive of that.”

Whitney Houston や Mariah Carey、Alicia Keys と比較されるのは「スゴいことだ」と彼女はいう。「でも、やらなきゃいけないことがまだいっぱいあるの・・・」

Comparisons to Houston, Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys are “just amazing,” she says, “but I’ve got a lot of hard work to do.”

Cowell described Lewis as “very, very, very shy.”

「わざわざ名前をあげるまでもないが、みんなの前に出ると我を失ってダメになるアーティストがたくさんいる。しかし彼女はまったくその逆だ。家庭を愛し、もの静かで、シャイ。そして歌うのが好き。そういうことだ。」

“I don’t need to name names,” he said, “but you see a lot of these artists at the moment who are literally melting down in public. This girl is the complete opposite. She’s a home-loving, quiet, shy person who loves singing. That’s the end of it.”
