失敗してもなんども挑戦する「アリーナに立つ男」の話。
セオドア・ルーズベルト（Theodore Roosevelt）大統領の 1910 年のスピーチ。
この数日、二度にわたってネットに登場した。

ひとつは TechCrunch40 に参加した Yossi Vardi が、現代の起業家に重ねて語った。「あら探しなんかどうでもいい。失敗しても挑戦することだ」と・・・

批判はどうでもよい。つまり人がどれだけ強く躓いたか、行動力のある辣腕の人にやらせたらどこがもっとうまくできたか、粗探しはどうでもよい。名誉はすべて、実際にアリーナに立つ男にある。その顔は汗と埃、血にまみれている。勇敢に戦い、失敗し、何度も何度もあと一歩で届かないことの繰り返しだ。そんな男の手に名誉はある。なぜなら失敗と弱点のないところに努力はないからだ。ところが常に完璧を目指して現場で戦う人、偉大な熱狂を知る人、偉大な献身を知る人、価値ある志のためなら自分の身を粉にして厭わない人…結局最後に勝利の高みを極めるのは彼らなのだ。最悪、失敗に終わっても少なくとも全力で挑戦しながらの敗北である。彼らの魂が眠る場所は、勝利も敗北も知らない冷たく臆病な魂と決して同じにはならない。
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face in marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.
