大学の同級生が情報源で、アップルで働いたことがあり、Leopard 延期のときも当てたからというのだが・・・

実はその後に出たニューヨークタイムズ John Markoff 記者の記事が興味深い。iPhone よりひと回り大きいポータブルデバイスについて書いたのだ。

スワ待望のウェブ端末の登場か・・・

すべての始まりは Alan Kay

３６年昔、Alan Kay はポータブルコンピュータ Dynabook のラフなスケッチを描いた。そしてそれは理想的なパーソナルコンピュータを象徴となった。

John Markoff はこう書き始める。Alan Kay のタブレットデザインは今日のラップトップの原型になったのだ。

一方、形もサイズも多様化したガジェット群の中から、手のひらにのる、パームサイズあるいはハンドヘルドという一般型が生まれた。Palm Pilot、BlackBerry、iPhone がその流れを汲む。

かくてポータブルの世界には、膝に置いて使うラップトップと、ポケットにはいるハンドヘルドという二つのカテゴリーが生まれた。

そのような例として、インテルの MID（Mobile Internet Device）、マイクロソフトの UMPC（Ultra Mobile PC）があり、最近の例としては Amazon の Kindle ブックリーダーがある。しかし、いずれもうまくいっていない。

そもそもインテルが MID に熱心なのは、ARM に比べてパワーハングリーな Atom プロセッサを売り込むためだという皮肉な見方もあるのだ。

究極のダイナブック

当初私は MID というアイデアがとても気に入った。［ハンドヘルドの］小さなスクリーンと豆粒キーボードはどこでもアクセスできるユビキタスな Web にはそぐわないように思えた。スリムなペーパーブックサイズのコンピュータなら、そしてそれにブルートゥースのヘッドセットをつければ携帯電話に変化する。それなら究極の Dynabook といえるかもしれない、と。

Initially, however, I bought into the M.I.D. idea. It seemed that small screens and pico-size keyboards were ill matched for the ubiquitous Web. A slim paperback book-size computer, perhaps with a Bluetooth headset to transform it into a mobile phone, might comprise the ultimate Dynabook.

単なる空想

MID サイズのタブレットなら、万能メディアプレーヤや Web ブラウザ、コミュニケータなど様々の要求を完全に充たすことができると一時考えたこともある。もしかしたら、新聞紙に代わる新しい時代の完璧なプラットフォームとして、私が籍をおく業界を蘇らせることができるかもしれないとさえ考えた。しかしそれは単なる空想に過ぎなかったようだ。

At one time, I thought that an M.I.D.-size slate might prove the perfect compromise: a jack-of-all-trades media player, Web browser, communicator. I even dared to dream that it might become the perfect canvas to help resurrect my industry in a post-paper era. It’s probably just a daydream.

iPhone 向けにデザインし直されたサイト

なにしろ私は強い衝撃を受けたのだ。Amazon や Facebook、Twitter といったサイトが iPhone 向けにデザインし直されたのを見て・・・。完全な Web スクリーンの場合よりその使用感はずっと優れていた。手のひらサイズの 3.5 インチスクリーンで見る高解像度の画面は、みんながやっていることやＥメールを読むのにどうやら十分だと分ったのだ。新聞を読むことについてすらも・・・

After all, I’ve been struck recently to see that when Web sites like Amazon, Facebook and Twitter are redesigned for the iPhone, the user experience is actually better than on a full Web screen. It turns out that a high-resolution, palm-size, three-and-a-half-inch screen is just fine for seeing what your friends are up to, and for reading your e-mail and even your newspaper.

WWDC で新型ポータブルデバイスが出るという冒頭のウワサにもかかわらず、どうやら John Markoff は iPhone よりひと回り大きなタブレットが出る可能性は遠のいたと見ているようだ。

新しいデバイスが出る技術的可能性よりも、Web 自体がデバイスに合わせて変化する可能性を重く見ている。

これまでデスクトップの画面に合わせて最適化してきた Web が、これからは iPhone などハンドヘルド型に合わせてそのあり方を変えていく、と。

筆者としてはポケットブックサイズのウェブ端末を渇望してやまないのだが、その可能性は本当にないのだろうか・・・

これぞ世界最小のマックというわけ・・・

Leopard は OQO でも動く

Psystar のマッククローンのおかげで「Hackintosh」に対する関心が復活した。しかし無印 PC ボックス（generic PC box）で OS X を走らせるなんてもう過去の話だ。いまや Mac OS X は小ちゃな UMPC でも動くのだ。こいつはおもしろいじゃないか。TechRader の報じるところによれば、trf というハッカーが OQO e2 で Leopard を動かすことができたそうだ。なかなかカッコいい。

All the hubbub surrounding Psystar’s Mac clones has renewed interest in “Hackintoshes,” but running OS X on a generic PC box is so passé. Now, Mac OS X running on a tiny UMPC: that’s interesting. TechRader notes that hacker “trf” managed to get Leopard running on his OQO e2, and it looks pretty slick.

OQOtalk フォーラムのメンバーの中には、このハックは明らかにニセモノだというものもいるが、いささかピンぼけの YouTube ビデオまで含めたその詳細を trf が投稿している。フェイク映像でないことを示すため、このビデオでは Leopard が起動し、カバーフローやダッシュボードがデモするところまで写している。

Though several members of the OQOtalk forums thought the hack was an obvious fake, trf posted details about it, including a rather blurry YouTube video. The video shows the tiny device booting Leopard, as well as CoverFlow and Dashboard demos to quell doubts it was photochopped.

元アップル社員が設立した OQO

tfr が見せるのは 800×480 の固定解像度スクリーンで Leopard が動くところだけで、 WWAN ネットワークでも動くかどうかは試していない。それでも Mac OS X が VIA ベースのハードウェアでちゃんと動くところは大変興味深い。もうひとつ興味深いのは OQO を設立したのが元アップル社員だということだ。彼らは OQO に似たデバイスで OS X を動かすアイデアがボツにされたときに退社したらしい。だからといって iTablet がすぐにでも登場するのではないかという希望は叶えられそうにない。どうしても今欲しいということなら、自分のデバイスをハックする方法はきっとみつかる。もちろん我々は EULA 違反を大目に見るつもりはないが・・・

Though tfr has only gotten Leopard to work at a fixed 800×480 resolution and hasn’t tried to get WWAN networking working, Mac OS X running at all on the VIA-based hardware is interesting nonetheless. Another curiosity is that OQO was founded by ex-Apple employees who left the company when their idea for an OQO-like device running OS X was supposedly shot down. Still, I wouldn’t get your hopes all worked up for an iTablet anytime soon. If you really want one now, though, you could always figure out ways to hack your own (we do not condone the smashing of EULAs, though).

そして、Jobs の “Just One More Thing” は MacBook Mini だというのだ。

MacBook Mini は、多分 Jobs のキーノートの最後の場での「Just One More Thing」として登場するだろう。発表後直ちに発売されるかどうか分らない。Menlow はまだ大量出荷の段階には至っていないと考えられるからだ。ただアップルとインテルのことだからサプライズがあるかもしれない。インテルが昨年出荷したコンピュータチップは２億 1000 万個だが、そのうちの 700 万個はマック用だ。ということはアップルはインテルにとって一番大切な顧客のひとりだということであり、みんなの予想を裏切って変化が起きてもおかしくはないからだ。

The MacBook Mini could conceivably be unveiled as the “Just One More Thing” that appears at the end of every Jobs keynote. It’s doubtful the machine would be available for immediate sale because Menlow isn’t thought to be shipping in volume yet. But Apple and Intel could surprise us. Intel shipped some 210 million PC chips last year, 7 million of which were for Macs, making Apple one of Intel’s most important customers and giving it a reason to move faster than anyone expects.

Mac Nano

Steve mentions the iPod Nano, calling it the best-selling music device in history. He then reminds us that the ﾒNanoﾓ used to be ﾒMiniﾓ and brings up the existence of the Mac Mini. Steve then unveils the “Mac Nano,” a redesigned Mac Mini that is approximately half the height of its predecessor and in an anodized aluminum shell to match recent design changes in the Apple lineup.

The Mac Nano will come in two flavors, 2.0 GHz and 2.2 GHz (using current Santa Rosa chips), each of which comes standard with a 32 GB solid-state drive. Build-to-order options will include a 64 GB solid-state drive, as well as the option to instead use a conventional hard drive, with sizes up to 160 GB, all 5400 rpm.

Said that the 12” MacBook Pro was sort of like the PowerBook G5–everyone wanted it, but it was never meant to happen. Instead, Apple is entering the market with the “MacBook Nano,” the smallest and lightest Mac laptop ever produced.

This new ultra-portable will come with a 13” LED-backlit screen with 1280×800 resolution. It will come in two flavors, using 1.6 GHz and 1.8 GHz low-voltage Core 2 Duos each. The lower-end will feature a 32 GB SSD, the higher- a 64 GB. Neither will use optical drives and will rely on integrated graphics.

Steve will also reveal that they will be capable of getting up to 10 hours battery life. The two models will retail for $1,499 and $1,999, respectively.

Apple to adopt Intel’s ultra-mobile PC platform

おもしろい！

アップルが開発しているといわれる ultra-mobile PC プラットフォームの行方を占う意味で大変おもしろい。

インテルの向かう方向とアップルのそれが一致したというか、アップルがインテルに影響を与えたというか・・・

AppleInsider（Kasper Jade）のなかなかの力作記事だ。

It remains unclear whether Apple will be ready to divulge details of its own Silverthrone-based products at next month’s Macworld Expo, or if those announcements will be reserved until a later date to coincide with general availability of the Intel chip.

Nevertheless, Apple’s decision to adopt the Menlow platform further suggests a longer-term strategy that would indeed see the electronics maker step up to that platform’s successor, Moorestown, in 2009 or 2010.

AppleInsider reported Friday that Apple has decided to use Intel’s upcoming low-power Silverthorne chip in “not one but multiple products currently situated on its 2008 calendar year product roadmap.” Silverthorne is Intel’s latest push to capture the handheld/mobile phone market as part of a product concept called the Mobile Internet Device.

また同レポートによると、Silverthorneが搭載される可能性が最も高いのは、3G対応iPhoneとAppleInsiderが先に報じたNewtonに似たタブレット型コンピュータだという。しかし、Silverthorneに関するこれまでの情報を踏まえると、サブタブレットPCに搭載されるという噂にはうなずけるが、iPhoneに搭載される可能性は低いと思われる。［CNET Japan 訳］

The report goes on to say that the most likely candidates for Silverthorne are a 3G iPhone and the Newton-like tablet computer that AppleInsider reported on earlier in the year. Based on what we know about Silverthorne, I think the subtablet rumor might make sense, but a Silverthorne iPhone is unlikely.

小型で極薄、軽量の MacBook が Macworld Expo で発表されると AppleInsider がいっている。どうやったら MacBook を今より更に薄くできるのか。光学ドライブを取り除くのだ。iMac がフロッピードライブを無くしたとすると、このマシンは CD/DVD ドライブを無くするのだ。マジック８ボールの占いによれば AppleInsider はほぼ間違いない。

Smaller, super-thin, lightweight MacBooks coming at Macworld Expo, says AppleInsider. How’s Apple making it so much thinner than current MacBooks? By eliminating the optical disk drive — i.e. what the iMac was to the floppy, this machine is to the CD/DVD drive. My Magic 8-ball says AppleInsider is mostly correct.

追記：マジック８ボールにさらに尋ねてみた。この極薄 MacBook はフラッシュメモリーではなく、ハードディスクドライブのままだろうかと。答えは「そのとおり」だった。だって iPod Classic はハードドライブ内蔵で、とても薄いから・・・

UPDATE: I asked my Magic 8-ball if this upcoming super-thin MacBook still has a (non-Flash memory) hard disk drive, and the answer came back: “IT IS CERTAIN”. (iPod Classics have hard drives; they’re pretty thin.)
