Gizmodo のアップルタブレットに関する記事が注目を浴びている。

その中でつぎの下りがとくに気になった。

数年前 Steve Jobs のところに、マルチタッチタブレットで動くように改良された OS X のバージョンが持ち込まれた。「これで何をしたらいいの？」という質問に答られずお蔵入りとなった。それ以来音楽、映画、テレビなどのコンテンツで成功を重ねたアップルは、こんどは主な出版社からの複数のメディアにまたがる印刷コンテンツを iTunes に含めるべく最大限の努力を払っている。

Several years ago, a modified version of OS X was presented to Steve Jobs, running on a multitouch tablet. When the question “what would people do with this?” couldn’t be answered, they shelved it. Long having established music, movie and TV content, Apple is working hard to load up iTunes with print content from several major publishing houses across several media.

新しいユーザー体験は何かという問いに答えられずお蔵入りしたという点が興味深い。

タブレットは iPhone 登場以前に開発済みであったことはよく知られているが、技術的には可能性でも新しいユーザー体験は何かというせめぎあいがあったことを窺わせる。

Steve Jobs のゴーサインが出るかどうかも、このあたりの見極めにかかっているのだろう。

これから来年１月１９日（？）までの間、大きな楽しみが増えた。

ネットでたいへん関心を集めている記事なので是非とも satomi 氏の全訳を期待したいところだ。

日本でも、はやくも「うま口Mac。」の Podee 氏がその概要を紹介している。６月に始まった気鋭のブログだが視点が鋭くさすが・・・

手術後に復帰した Steve Jobs にはもっぱらプレスリリースでしかお目にかかれない。

その Jobs が Coldplay のコンサートツアーに現われたらしい。

一連のニュースの元になったのが、ツアーを追っかけていた Roadie #42 の報告だ。

月曜夜のマウンテンビュー Shoreline Amphitheatre の様子をつぎのように書いている。

白状すると、今夜ボクにとって意味があったのは Steve Jobs がそこにいたということだけだ。ボクは根っからのアップルファン。いまの仕事をするのに Macbook Pro（それ以前は Powerbook）がないなんて想像もできない。こんなツールを造り出し、ボクらが使うことを可能にしてくれたのは Steve Jobs のビジョンがあったればこそだ。

“I’ll be honest with you folks, the only thing that mattered to me tonight was the presence of one Steve Jobs. I’m a confirmed Apple devotee and I really cannot imagine doing the job I do now (or even having got into this line of work) without my Macbook Pro (and all the Powerbooks that went before it). Steve が更衣室の前で Dave Holmes とおしゃべりしているのを見かけて、あこがれの大スターを前にしたティーンエイジャーみたいな気分になってしまった。あつかましくも彼に声をかけられるように苦いエスプレッソをグイと飲みこんだ。カフェインと安っぽいファンボーイの気分に助けられてなんとか口にできたのは「どうもありがとう」というひとことだけ。自分がバカみたい（？）なことに気づき、早々に彼の前から立ち去った。

The mixture of caffeine buzz and feeling like a cheesy little fanboy means that all I can manage to say to him is “Thank you so much”. Jobs が Coldplay のファンであることは知られているが、コンサートに出席できるまでに回復したのであればうれしい。

App Store が初年度で 15 億ダウンロードを達成したとアップルが発表。そのプレスリリースに Steve Jobs が引用されている。

どうやら復帰後の Jobs の仕事は、プレスリリースに登場してアップルの本音を語ることらしい・・・

Steve Jobs が正式に職場復帰したというニュースが流れたばかりだが、Jobs が登場するスペシャルイベントが８月にあるというウワサを LOOPRumors が伝えている。

LOOPRumors の信頼できる情報によると、Steve Jobs が８月に開催されるスペシャルイベントで初めて公開の場に姿を現すという。肝臓移植手術後初めて公に復帰を飾ることになる。

Reliable sources have told LOOPRumors that Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs will mark his first public appearance since his liver transplant surgery at a ‘Special Event’ to be held in August.

この時期にリニューアルされそうなのは iPod がらみだ。iPod touch や iPod nano にカメラ機能が追加されるというのが最近のもっぱらのウワサだ。

The iPods are most likely to see refreshes around this time, with recent rumors indicating that Apple will add camera functionality to both the iPod touch and iPod nano lines.

加えて、秋の新学期に合わせて iMacs もリニューアルされ、価格が下がるというニュースもある。

Additionally, recent news suggests the iMacs may see refreshes in time for the education buyers with price cuts.

しかし、このイベントによって、CEO の健康状態に関する様々な思惑に終止符が打たれる点が一番重要だろう。

Most importantly, however, the event should quell speculation of the condition of the CEO’s health.

Steve Jobs は肝臓移植手術を受けたとウォールストリートジャーナル紙が報じている。

術後順調に快復中であり、６月末には復帰の予定だと云う。ナンバー２の比重が増すことになるのではないかとも伝えている。

This must be a deliberate, timed leak from Apple. The timing is simply perfect from Apple’s perspective — midnight on the Friday of what appears to be the most successful new product launch in company history.

But two things strike me about this story. First, the WSJ offers no source for this information — not even an “according to sources close to the matter”…

Second, why Tennessee? …

I’m curious about the reported timing. The Journal story says “about two months ago”, but I heard from a bunch of sources last week at WWDC that Jobs had been seen on campus the week before — i.e. about two weeks ago. I mean, he was there walking around, giving people hell like usual…

とすると・・・

So I’m thinking that if Steve Jobs had a liver transplant, it was more than “about two months” ago.

誰がどんな目的で漏らしたのか

What’s intriguing about this story is not the question of whether Jobs actually had a liver transplant. I do not doubt that (although I’d like to see better sources for it). What is intriguing is the question of who leaked this information to the Journal and why.

仮説１）医療関係者

THEORY 1: That the information came without Jobs’s permission or knowledge, from a healthcare provider with knowledge of Jobs’s medical situation. [...]

THEORY 2: That the leak was authorized by Jobs himself. [...]

仮説３）取締役会の誰か

THEORY 3: That a member of Apple’s board of directors leaked the information to the Journal without Jobs’s permission or knowledge, or perhaps, if the matter of public disclosure had been posed to and dismissed by Jobs at a board meeting, expressly against Jobs’s wishes. [...]

This third scenario is my best guess as to the Journal’s source. It sounds sensational to speculate that there is conflict in this regard between Jobs and at least some contingent of Apple’s board of directors, but sensational or not, it makes more sense to me than any other scenario.

Tim Cook の可能性はないと思う

In theory the Journal’s source could be Tim Cook, but that goes against everything I have ever heard about Cook. I believe him to be loyal, honest, and to have deservedly earned Steve Jobs’s full trust. I truly believe that Cook would much prefer to continue in his current role in an Apple with Jobs as CEO than to be CEO of a Jobs-less Apple. Plus, Cook doesn’t need to angle through the press for anything. If Jobs steps down as CEO any time in the foreseeable future, the CEO job goes to Cook. No one whose opinion I value doubts this. It’s simply a question of whether Cook runs operations as “COO” with Steve Jobs overseeing product development, or as “CEO” without Steve Jobs overseeing product development.

But Wozniak has been “saying the same thing for six months” and took umbrage with yesterday’s WSJ.com story on the subject. “They printed [it] like I spoke it as new news,” he says. “I’m not sure how I was quoted. It wasn’t an interview.”
