Apple has made this play flawlessly. The enterprise and SDK solutions will go hand-in-hand to propel the iPhone to be THE handheld device of the future. Ironically, the PC just got its final blow not from a MacBook (which has been on the rise too!), but from a small new computer. Apple got its revenge elegantly, relentlessly and creatively. The next era of computing will be dominated by Apple. Is this a good thing? Likely yes, and it is surely better than one dominated by Microsoft.

The release of iPhone 2.0 is over three months away, but I’ll stick my neck out and make a prediction: it will be a gigantic success, spreading the iPhone’s popularity both upward, into the corporate market, and downward, into the hands of the masses. iPhone 2.0 will turn this phone into an engineering tool, a game console, a free-calls Skype phone, a business tool, a dating service, an e-book reader, a chat room, a database, an Etch-a-Sketch…and that’s on Day One.

In short, it’s not going to be a pleasant summer for people who are sick of hearing about the iPhone.

1. Once you’ve installed all the packages you’re allowed to install, go back into the mounted DMG and go into the Packages folder.
2. See all the Aspen packages at the top? Double-click on them and install them, one at a time.
3. You should now have a Platforms folder in your default installation directory, which for these packages is probably at the root level of your hard drive. Make sure it’s there.
4. In that Platforms folder is where all of the iPhone-related SDK stuff was installed. Take everything in that folder and put it into the /Developer/Platforms/ folder in your main Developer directory.
5. Restart Xcode (if you had it open) and you should be greeted with new choices for iPhone applications as well as the AspenSimulator device to test your code on.

Sadun, one of the early and prominent iPhone hackers as well as a prodigious TUAW writer, is working on a book called iPhone Programming. Last night, while working on CoverFlow, she came up with swell app launcher that is one big CoverFlow view. Currently, this only works with apps and not webclips, though Sadun hasn’t yet ruled out the possibility.

The code can be downloaded from Sadun’s website for an instant spiff-up to your jailbroken iPhone. TUAW’s Mike Schramm says it best: “If this is the kind of stuff we’re getting from Sadun before the SDK drops, just think what we’ll see after.”

アップルが iPhone SDK を出すと約束した時期まであと余すところ一週間と時間がなくなった。ある情報筋は遅れるといっている。理由は不明で、正式の出荷は１～３週間の遅れになるという話もある。

There’s a week to go before Apple’s commitment to release the iPhone Software Developers Kit in February runs out of room. I’m hearing from one source that its going to be late. I’m not yet hearing any reasons why, and it’s sounding like the official release date could slide by anywhere from one to three weeks.

アップルからのコメントはなく、今のところ来週の SDK 発表に関するイベントはなんにも聞こえてこない。もっとも、事態は流動的で、もし来週なにかがあるとしたら正確に何を発表し、何を発表しないのか、最後の決断が下されるだろうという話も聞こえてくる。これほど込み入った仕事になると片付けるべき事柄も多いのだ。

Apple had no comment, and as yet there’s no word on any events related to an SDK release next week. However I’m also hearing that the situation is fluid, and a lot of last-minute decisions are close to being made about what precisely will or will not be disclosed next week, if anything. There are, apparently, a lot of moving parts to something this complex.

There are some very tight limits on memory usage. You’re given approximately 64 MB of space to work with (about half of what’s available.) If you go beyond that, Springboard shuts you down unceremoniously. That combined with the fact that there isn’t any swap space where unused objects can go to rest, makes for some design decisions that you haven’t had to consider in the desktop environment.

Don’t think that your desktop and mobile application will share any look and feel. There may be slight resemblances with regard to branding, but that’s about it. Does Safari look like MobileSafari? Sure it has the same icon, but…

It’s likely that there will be a simulator in the iPhone SDK. Don’t believe for a second that you’ll be able to use this simulated device for all your development and testing. You have to literally live with the application.

CEO Steve Jobs tried to assuage developers by reminding them that they could create Web applications for the iPhone, which is sort of like telling a teenager that no, you can’t have a car, but isn’t this the nicest bike you’ve ever seen?

The iPhone runs OS X, which is essentially a derivative of Mac OS X with all the parts you don’t need on a phone stripped out to make the software smaller and easier on your battery. There are tested and proven Unix fundamentals at the core of OS X, but Apple apparently felt it couldn’t guarantee a reliable experience on the iPhone until it made sure that no security holes had been created in the development of the mobile operating system.

As the always-entertaining Macalope put it today, “Well, NOW what is everybody going to complain about?”

This SDK will change the way people think about the iPhone. Research In Motion and Motorola will be able to port the BlackBerry and Good Mobile Messaging software to the iPhone, allowing secure access to corporate e-mail. Browser developers will be able to release products with Flash or Java support and really bring the full Internet to your pocket. And some independent developer toiling away in his or her basement on weekends will come up with a totally new application that takes advantage of the touch-screen interface to do something really cool, and start a business around that software.

今回発表したSDKにより、人々のiPhoneに対する考え方は変わるだろう。例えばResearch In MotionやMotorolaなら、企業向けの電子メールへ安全にアクセスできる「BlackBerry」および「Good Mobile Messaging」ソフトウェアをiPhoneに移植することも可能になる。また、サードパーティーのブラウザ開発者は、現行のiPhone向けSafariが対応していないFlashやJavaをサポートする製品をリリースできるわけで、これが実現すれば、真の意味でフル機能のインターネットをポケットサイズに収めたことになる。さらに、週末になると地下の一室でソフトウェア開発に励む独立系開発者は、タッチスクリーン・インターフェースの長所を生かしてあっと驚くような素晴らしいことができる全く新しいアプリケーションを考え出し、そのソフトウェアを使って事業を立ち上げるはずだ。

Developing web applications for the iPhone provides you with an insanely easy deployment scenario, gives you complete control over the reliability and stability of the environment, gives you complete control over patching and updating your application, and has a lot more going for it. For what I think is the minority of app dev needs, that remaining gap will be filled by the upcoming SDK. If you don’t need the strong level of OS integration that you get with the SDK, then developing an iPhone web app is still the way to go.  [Kevin Hoffman]
