ストリートミュージシャンはこんなにもすばらしいのか。盲目のグランパ・エリオット、オランダの Clarence Bekker、南アフリカの Sinamuva が特にすばらしいと思った。

それにしてもこんなすてきなビデオを作ったのはいったい誰？

Huffington Post によると、このビデオを制作したのは PlayingforChange.com。アフリカ AIDS 基金などに資するためだという。

つぎつぎに登場するすばらしいストリートミュージシャンはオランダ、フランス、ブラジル、モスクワ、南アフリカ、コンゴにまで及んでいる。ニューオーリンズからは［Grandpa Elliott の他に］Washboard Chaz や Roberto Luti も登場。YouTube のビデオを見た人はすでに 900 万人を超えているという。このプロジェクトの着想について、監督の Jonathan Walls が昨年ここで語っている。つぎのプロジェクトについては Mike Ragogna がここで述べている。PlayingforChange は間もなく世界市場で音楽を売って、その収益を音楽学校の基金にする予定。

The dizzying array of performers includes street musicians as far flung as the Netherlands, France, Brazil, Moscow, South Africa and the Congo. Washboard Chaz and Roberto Luti also represent in New Orleans. Nine million viewers have seen the video on YouTube already, and Director Jonathan Walls described the inception of the project HERE on HuffPo last spring. Mike Ragogna described the next wave HERE, PlayingforChange will soon publish and promote music to a global market with a portion of the profits funding music schools.

Winfrey isn’t the only one convinced by the 22-year-old former X-Factor winner (American Idol’s British cousin), who has drawn comparisons to Whitney Houston. Simon Cowell, who judges both shows, and RCA Music Group chairman Clive Davis are overseeing her album, Spirit, which arrives April 8 in the USA and is already the biggest-selling debut in British history.

最後のことばはとくにピッタリだ。というのも自作レコードアルバムの「Soul」（米国では来春発売予定）は、ほかの曲も含めてすべて、彼女がパリのアパートで１台のコンピュータで録音したものだからだ。ミュージシャンの David Donatien と一緒に、作曲しては録音し、ボツにしてはまた録音する。それを繰り返して自分のルーツと過去の困難を扱った曲のコレクションを作り上げるのに２年以上かかったのだ。（フランス語とヘブライ語、それに英語で歌っている。）そうすることによって、自分の中に子供のときからあった音楽に対する情熱を再発見したのだった。

That would be especially fitting, since “Soul” — and everything else on Naim’s self-titled album, which is due here in the States in the spring — was recorded on a single computer in her Paris apartment. Working with musician David Donatien, she spent more than two years writing, recording, scrapping, re-recording and building a collection of songs that reflect her heritage (she sings in French, Hebrew and English) and her past struggles. And in doing so, she rediscovered the passion for music that drove her as a child.
