One thing that makes being an Apple pundit fun is that it’s akin to Cold-War era Kremlinology — to predict or analyze an opaque, secretive organization, you’ve got to read between the lines of the few things they do say, and you’ve got to know how to interpret silence.
If it’s even possible, Apple has gotten even better at keeping keynote announcements under wraps in recent years. One reason for this is simple: Apple engineers don’t leak. And I think the reason for that is pretty simple, too: Apple engineers really like their jobs. If you want to work for a company like Apple, on products like those that Apple makes, you’ve pretty much got to work for Apple, because there are no similar companies.

Apple Looking Less Shiny? Look Again

There was little loving for Apple on Wall Street after Steve Jobs delivered his keynote speech at his company’s Macworld Conference & Expo on Jan. 15. The company’s shares fell 5.5%, more than twice the 2.5% decline by the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite Index, as analysts and investors digested news of an ultra-slim laptop, a video rental service, and a much improved Apple TV set-top box. The lineup satisfied the Mac fans in the crowd, but none of it was unexpected or as dramatic a move as the introduction of the iPhone at last year’s show.
But longtime Apple watchers say the disappointment won’t last…

マックワールドのバナー「2008. There’s something in the air.」が話題になっている。
この文言自体の意味がよく分らない。
いつも頼りにしている Long Tail World の satomi さんも、この文言だけはスルーだ。

あれこれググってみると、1969 年の全英ヒット曲にこの歌詞があった。同年のナンバーワンヒット曲「Something In The Air」だ。
英国ロック史に名を残した幻の名グループ Thunderclap Newman の唯一のアルバムだという。
その冒頭にこの歌詞が出てくる。

また MWSF キーノートの台本流出か？
MWSF 2008 キーノートの台本（と称するもの）がまた流出している。
Wikipedia に載ったが、すでに削除されてしまった。
内容はともかく、その構成や書きぶりがいかにも本物らしい感じがするのだ。「梗概のドラフト５」という次のようなタイトルに続いて、

詳しく見ようと思って次に行ってみたら、もう Wikipedia からは削除されていた。
そうなると俄然気に懸かってくる。
ググってみたら、Mac Rumors のフォーラムで全文がみつかった。［最初に読んだものと微妙に異なる。Moscow が変わっているし、価格も異なる。］コメントを見ると半信半疑のひとが多いようだが、ひょっとしたら・・・

そういえば、流出台本のあとに、ああでもないこうでもないと書き込みが続いていた。［１月９日～１０日まで］
これまで流出台本と称するものが本物だった試しがないので、これも同様だろう。
Wikipedia からコピーしておいたものと、上記の Mac Forums のものとを比べると、同じ draft 5 なのに微妙に違っているので、その意味でも信憑性は疑わしい。

MacBook Mini は、多分 Jobs のキーノートの最後の場での「Just One More Thing」として登場するだろう。発表後直ちに発売されるかどうか分らない。Menlow はまだ大量出荷の段階には至っていないと考えられるからだ。ただアップルとインテルのことだからサプライズがあるかもしれない。インテルが昨年出荷したコンピュータチップは２億 1000 万個だが、そのうちの 700 万個はマック用だ。ということはアップルはインテルにとって一番大切な顧客のひとりだということであり、みんなの予想を裏切って変化が起きてもおかしくはないからだ。
The MacBook Mini could conceivably be unveiled as the “Just One More Thing” that appears at the end of every Jobs keynote. It’s doubtful the machine would be available for immediate sale because Menlow isn’t thought to be shipping in volume yet. But Apple and Intel could surprise us. Intel shipped some 210 million PC chips last year, 7 million of which were for Macs, making Apple one of Intel’s most important customers and giving it a reason to move faster than anyone expects.

We’ve received two purported transcripts for the Macworld 2008 Keynote. For some reason, fake transcripts appear to be a popular thing to submit to rumor sites. Mac Nano
Steve mentions the iPod Nano, calling it the best-selling music device in history. He then reminds us that the ﾒNanoﾓ used to be ﾒMiniﾓ and brings up the existence of the Mac Mini. Steve then unveils the “Mac Nano,” a redesigned Mac Mini that is approximately half the height of its predecessor and in an anodized aluminum shell to match recent design changes in the Apple lineup.
The Mac Nano will come in two flavors, 2.0 GHz and 2.2 GHz (using current Santa Rosa chips), each of which comes standard with a 32 GB solid-state drive. Build-to-order options will include a 64 GB solid-state drive, as well as the option to instead use a conventional hard drive, with sizes up to 160 GB, all 5400 rpm.

Said that the 12” MacBook Pro was sort of like the PowerBook G5–everyone wanted it, but it was never meant to happen. Instead, Apple is entering the market with the “MacBook Nano,” the smallest and lightest Mac laptop ever produced.
This new ultra-portable will come with a 13” LED-backlit screen with 1280×800 resolution. It will come in two flavors, using 1.6 GHz and 1.8 GHz low-voltage Core 2 Duos each. The lower-end will feature a 32 GB SSD, the higher- a 64 GB. Neither will use optical drives and will rely on integrated graphics.
Steve will also reveal that they will be capable of getting up to 10 hours battery life. The two models will retail for $1,499 and $1,999, respectively.
