A month after its debut at Macworld Expo and a few weeks after it began shipping to customers, there seem to be an awful lot of people doubting the sales prospects of the MacBook Air. I remain convinced, however, that it’s going to be a big hit.
The key to understanding the appeal of the Air is that you’ve got to stop thinking about technical specs as the primary factors. Here’s an analogy: the MacBook Air is like a sporty convertible coupe. You buy one not for practical reasons,
Born in France, raised outside Tel Aviv, Israel, she’s already logged time in the Israeli Defense Forces, done a turn as Moses’ sister in a musical version of “The Ten Commandments” and had one nightmarish run with a major label. And now she’s somehow wound up as the voice of Apple’s new MacBook Air, thanks to a near-ubiquitous commercial featuring her song “New Soul.” So, really, please pardon her if she’s still a little dumbfounded by the sudden attention she’s receiving.
“This whole thing is very special, because of the way we made the song, and so we didn’t have any dreams about big commercial success. So we are happy and surprised and amazed by how it grow and grows,” she said. “We are trying to not — how do you say it — to lose our heads, so we are a little conscious of everything that’s happening. But I suppose it’s a good thing because people will know the music. Honestly, we do not even know if we will get computers yet!”
That would be especially fitting, since “Soul” — and everything else on Naim’s self-titled album, which is due here in the States in the spring — was recorded on a single computer in her Paris apartment. Working with musician David Donatien, she spent more than two years writing, recording, scrapping, re-recording and building a collection of songs that reflect her heritage (she sings in French, Hebrew and English) and her past struggles. And in doing so, she rediscovered the passion for music that drove her as a child.
Instead, all three Apple products aimed at delivering a strong and appealing design to the point where their specification numbers faded into the background. Apple markets its products, not as a list of GHz and GB numbers, but the same way top automakers do: as well built and attractively crafted machines that have enough under the hood so that they just work. Most car buyers are swayed by sexy designs they find appealing or the utilitarian practicality they need rather than the foot pounds of torque the vehicle’s engine provides at a given RPM range.
We found Intel’s new Core 2 Duo chip right beneath the heat sink (no surprises there). A temperature sensor sits on an external board glued between the CPU and graphics chips.
CNET News.com has learned that Lenovo and Fujitsu are in the process of putting together systems based on the special Core 2 Duo chip that Apple is using in the MacBook Air. The new laptops should be out shortly, according to sources familiar with the companies’ plans, and will give customers a chance to see what the rest of the PC industry can do with the power-thrifty chips.
While Apple got the scoop on that new chip–which, since the company asked Intel to build it, seems fair–Intel has other customers. After the MacBook Air was introduced at Macworld, Intel representatives said the chip would be offered to the rest of the PC industry if they were interested. And much of the technology used in the chip will become part of Intel’s mainstream offerings when the Montevina platform is released later this year.
This is a chip for ultraportable notebooks, loosely defined as notebooks weighing 3 pounds or less. Those kinds of notebooks aren’t for everyone, but they tend to appeal to the frequent business travelers that might already be Lenovo ThinkPad customers. Fujitsu might not be a household name in this country when it comes to PCs, but its LifeBook lineup of small notebooks and tablet PCs has been focused on small designs for several years.
For this first set of tests, we used a default-configuration MacBook Air powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a 4200 rpm, 1.8-inch 80GB parallel ATA hard drive. The MacBook Air’s processor clock speed lags well behind current MacBook (2.0GHz or 2.2GHz) and MacBook Pro (2.2GHz, 2.4GHz, and 2.6GHz) models, and its hard drive is also slower than those used in the other models.
Our tests reveal that the slower processor and disk make the MacBook Air quite a bit slower than the other portables in Apple’s product line. The MacBook Air was also outpaced in our tests by the its closest desktop cousin, the ultra-compact 1.83GHz Mac mini Core 2 Duo.
Take that specially packaged Intel CPU, how did that come about? Steve Jobs didn’t beat the heck out of Intel CEO Paul Otellini to get a little CPU that would go into fewer than half a million boxes. Steve did what he always does. He beat the heck out of Paul Otellini with the promise that this little CPU — for which we can expect Apple will hold some exclusive for the next six months — will end up in millions and millions of Apple products, nearly all of them costing a lot less than a MacBook Air.
(Apple’s ability to do more with less)は、他のメーカーにとっても常に刺激となっている。
Apple is very important to Intel. Though nobody says it out loud, Apple is the last of the major computer companies that uses 100 percent Intel processors. And Apple’s ability to do more with less has to be a continual inspiration to its competitors. As Apple slides further and further into the consumer electronics and networking markets, Intel will be right there, too. I still expect we’ll see an Apple tablet this year, for example, and it will use this same Intel CPU.
