History is now repeating itself. Just as Apple popularized the GUI on the desktop through the Mac, it’s popularizing the GUI on mobile devices through the iPhone.
The mouse let users own the cursor and thus gave them direct influence over the UI by acting as their personal on-screen representative. Similarly, the touch screen lets users directly manipulate UI elements on the mobile. Our current testing of how mobile users access websites shows how unpleasant it is for people to repeatedly press buttons to move around the screen. Featurephones — and even otherwise nice smartphones that are operated through buttons — offer an indirect user experience that feels less empowering than touchphones.

アップル王国の影の住人たちは、アップルがこれまでの伝統を破って 1 月のマックワールドエクスポで Mac Pro をリフレッシュすると言い張っている。1 月のイベントはこれまでコンシューマー向けと考えられていたので、一端決めたことは変えないアップルとしてはいささか変だ。
A couple of our shadow dwellers from the land of Apple insist that Apple will break with tradition and we should expect an announcement of a new refresh of the Mac Pros at the Macworld Conference and Expo in January. Typically, the January event is a more consumer-oriented event, which makes this sound a bit strange, as Apple likes to stick with what they have done in the past.
別のもっと変わった話としては、リフレッシュされた iMac と Mac Mini が 11 月 10 日に発表されるという話も聞こえてくる。これまたいつもと違っていて、iMac や Mac Mini はコンシューマ向けだからマックワールドエクスポで発表されるのが通常だ。しかし複数のソースが、アップルとしては年末商戦ですこしでも稼ぎたいと考えていること、Mac Pro 用のチップが 1 月までは十分確保できそうにないこと、そのためこれまでの伝統を変えざるを得ないのだと繰り返しいってきている。
In another strange twist, we are also hearing that we will see a launch for a revamped and refreshed iMac and Mac Mini on November 10th. Still, we would think that this would normally be the other way around, with the iMac and Mac Mini being launched at the Macworld Conference and Expo in January, as these are clearly more consumer oriented; but persistent sources are telling us that Apple would like to cash in on some holiday sales, and the chips for the Mac Pros will not be available in sufficient quantity until January so they have to break with tradition.

I don’t believe anybody’s going to ask for a HP or a Dell when they go to college… They’re going to ask for a Mac. It’s a remarkable pull. And unless you’ve seen kids use [Macs], I just don’t think you understand why Mac sales, beginning in February, have begin to accelerate. Go spend some time [with a] 13-year-old. [Windows PCs] are not computers, those are things that parents use, they are not computers, they are these devices that parents got because maybe they go talked into it… or because they didn’t understand… they’re not computers; a computer is a Mac. Like an iPod is your music device, a Mac is your computer – and those other things are just things that were from another day. They might as well be typewriters to these kids… It only takes one session of watching your kids to know that the other companies that make these devices are irrelevant.

This happens just about every time I write about Apple. In fairness, that aggressive behavior is not indicative of Mac users as a whole. But that very noisy, hardcore crowd distorts the issues and inflames the discussion, to the point where a rational look at Apple and its products becomes a quest to decide The World’s One True Religion, which never seems to work out so well in the real world.

I think the roots of this zealotry go back to a time when Apple was on the ropes financially and someone who worked on a Mac was ridiculed by other computer users. Ten years ago, Mac users in the corporate world were viewed as rubes playing with “toys” not suitable for getting real work done, and there were plenty of people ready to remind the Mac community in not-so-subtle ways that the revolution promised in the 1980s by the original Macintosh was being fulfilled by Microsoft software.

Tom Krazit の記事は、マック対 PC という図式に対する批判にもなっていてなかなかよく書けていると思う。
ただ、この程度の建設的「批判」でも、大量のコメントの嵐に襲われることになる。今現在その数は 343 に達している。
上に引用したポッドキャストで、慎重にことばを選びながらも辟易している感じの Tom Krazit が興味深い。ただ、マックユーザー一般と「凝り固まったやかまし屋の集団」とを区別しているところはさすがだ。
