UMPC で Mac OS X を動かすことに成功したハッカーがいるらしい。

これぞ世界最小のマックというわけ・・・

Leopard は OQO でも動く

Psystar のマッククローンのおかげで「Hackintosh」に対する関心が復活した。しかし無印 PC ボックス（generic PC box）で OS X を走らせるなんてもう過去の話だ。いまや Mac OS X は小ちゃな UMPC でも動くのだ。こいつはおもしろいじゃないか。TechRader の報じるところによれば、trf というハッカーが OQO e2 で Leopard を動かすことができたそうだ。なかなかカッコいい。

All the hubbub surrounding Psystar’s Mac clones has renewed interest in “Hackintoshes,” but running OS X on a generic PC box is so passé. Now, Mac OS X running on a tiny UMPC: that’s interesting. TechRader notes that hacker “trf” managed to get Leopard running on his OQO e2, and it looks pretty slick.

OQOtalk フォーラムのメンバーの中には、このハックは明らかにニセモノだというものもいるが、いささかピンぼけの YouTube ビデオまで含めたその詳細を trf が投稿している。フェイク映像でないことを示すため、このビデオでは Leopard が起動し、カバーフローやダッシュボードがデモするところまで写している。

Though several members of the OQOtalk forums thought the hack was an obvious fake, trf posted details about it, including a rather blurry YouTube video. The video shows the tiny device booting Leopard, as well as CoverFlow and Dashboard demos to quell doubts it was photochopped.

元アップル社員が設立した OQO

tfr が見せるのは 800×480 の固定解像度スクリーンで Leopard が動くところだけで、 WWAN ネットワークでも動くかどうかは試していない。それでも Mac OS X が VIA ベースのハードウェアでちゃんと動くところは大変興味深い。もうひとつ興味深いのは OQO を設立したのが元アップル社員だということだ。彼らは OQO に似たデバイスで OS X を動かすアイデアがボツにされたときに退社したらしい。だからといって iTablet がすぐにでも登場するのではないかという希望は叶えられそうにない。どうしても今欲しいということなら、自分のデバイスをハックする方法はきっとみつかる。もちろん我々は EULA 違反を大目に見るつもりはないが・・・

Though tfr has only gotten Leopard to work at a fixed 800×480 resolution and hasn’t tried to get WWAN networking working, Mac OS X running at all on the VIA-based hardware is interesting nonetheless. Another curiosity is that OQO was founded by ex-Apple employees who left the company when their idea for an OQO-like device running OS X was supposedly shot down. Still, I wouldn’t get your hopes all worked up for an iTablet anytime soon. If you really want one now, though, you could always figure out ways to hack your own (we do not condone the smashing of EULAs, though).

マックだけでなく iPhone、iPod touch などいろんなデバイスで Mac OS X が動くようになった。

今回の OQO を見ていると、このほかにもまだ OS X が動くデバイスはいろいろありそうな気がしてくる・・・

Of course silly Mac users are going to flog a study that shows that they, themselves, are five times more likely to say they’re “very satisfied” with their operating system than Vista users.

マック使ってるというヤツを相手に調査したって、問題があるに決まってるじゃん。どんなマヌケだって分るよ。

Now, any idiot can see the problem with surveying people who’ve already admitted to using the Mac.

Time Machine の問題

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard の目玉 Time Machine にも不具合があるようだ。

Time Machine の問題は二つ

A slew of Mac owners are experiencing two prominent issues with Apple’s Time Machine backup software, which comes bundled as part of the company’s new Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system. Numerous complaints began pouring in on the Cupertino-based company’s own support forums, mostly citing either stalled backups or invisible backup sets, according to Computerworld. Apple failed to properly test Time Machine before it launched Leopard, according to Ombudsman and former vice president of engineering at LaCie, Mike Mihalik. “The two tech notes that it’s released clarify what Apple should have done as part of the normal release,” Mihalik said, referring to two Apple notices covering the largest of the problems experienced by Time Machine users.

The two primary issues plaguing users are a near immediate failure to complete backups — which usually occurs after around 10MB of data is copied to the destination drive — and backups that complete but are invisible, making it appear as though the backup was never performed.

その１：stalled backup

The first issue is a result of improper formatting on some external hard drives, according to Apple. Some drives ship with a Master Boot Record partition, or a segment of the drive designed to point the computer at the proper location on the hard drive to begin the boot process. Drives with Master Boot Record partitions are incompatible with Time Machine, and Apple says users must first format the drive properly before using the storage devices to back up files.

その２：invisible backup sets

The second issue which results in ‘invisible’ backups occurs as a result of computer names that include non-alphanumeric characters. The special characters in a computer’s name make backups inaccessible and invisible via the Time Machine interface. Mihalik notes that Apple could have blocked all ‘illegal’ characters that would cause a backup to disappear from Time Machine, preventing improper names.

Mac OS X 10.5.1：不具合はなおるか

初期ソフトにありがちな話として、Leopard についても様々な不具合が報じられているが、早速アップルはアップデートを準備中らしい。

Mac OS X 10.5.1 が準備中

今朝取り上げた大量のデータロスという重大な問題の他にも、発売された Leopard にはまだバグがある。その多くは特定のコンピュータないしはアカウントに関係しているようだが、中には 802.11、QuickLook、アプリケーションの終了など広範囲に及ぶ問題もある。幸いアップルはその対応にあたっている。AppleInsider によれば 10.5.1 はすでに進行中であり、新しいビルドが来週にはテスターの手に渡る予定という。

In addition to the nasty data loss issue discussed earlier today, the launch version of Leopard has had its share of other bugs. Although many of the problems seem to be related to specific people’s computers and/or user accounts, some others include widespread issues with 802.11, QuickLook, and closing applications. Fortunately, Apple is on the case: AppleInsider is reporting that 10.5.1 is already on the way and that Apple plans to issue builds to testers in the coming week.

アップデートの内容で今分かっているのは、必ずや何かを修復するだろうということだけだが、アップルが主だったバグを修正することだけは確かだろう。もっとも、発売されたバージョンに間に合わなかった多くのコードも含まれているはずだが・・・

All we know about the update content for now is that it will definitely fix…something. Obviously, Apple will try and get any of the major bugs fixed, but the first Leopard update should also contain a lot of code that just missed the deadline for inclusion in the launch version.

プレリリースのビルドは数日中にテスターの手に渡るはずだ。しかし、10.4.11 の場合もそうだったが、すぐにもアップデートが出るというわけでもなさそうだ。

Testers should be receiving their pre-release builds in the next few days, but as we’ve seen with 10.4.11, the pre-release builds don’t necessarily mean the update is coming soon.

Leopard のインストール：筆者の場合

いくつもの不都合（glitch）の遭遇している筆者としても、一刻も早く Leopard のアップデートが出て欲しい。

Leopard のインストール自体は、とてもスムーズだった。

新しい Safari はサクサクと動いて気持ちがよく、それだけでも Leopard にアップグレードしてよかったと思った。

・特定のサイトについて問題が生じる

　 – Engadget → RSS 表示ができない

・漢字変換が途中でフリーズする

《Mail》
・強制終了をかけないと終了しない

《音声》
・テキスト読み上げの音声が変
・そのうち音声が一切出なくなる

《Photoshop》
・Photoshop 7 が使えなくなった

《Classic》
・Classic 環境が使えなくなった

《ecto》
・編集結果がすぐ反映されないことがある
・大きい画像を投稿すると generic アイコンに戻ってしまうことがある

筆者のマシンは iMac G5 だが、これらの不具合が筆者だけのものなのかそれとも一般的な症状なのかは不明。アップルのフォーラムで問題になっているものもあればそうでないものもある。［Apple、アップル］

アクセスが困難になるサイトは、いずれも筆者にとって欠かせないサイトなので困る。

Daring Fireball は一昨日から開けるようになった。Leopard ではなくサイトの方に問題があったようだ。Ars Technica や Engadget もひょっとするとそうか・・・

音声については、外部スピーカーを外したら内部スピーカーからは音が出ることに気がついた。（外部スピーカーやヘッドセットが使えない。）

目が悪い筆者の強力な助っ人だった読み上げ機能は Tiger より変な音声になってがっかりだ。

Mac OS X 10.5.1 のアップグレードでこのうちどれだけ解決するか分からないが、とにかく一刻も早く欲しいというのが正直な気持ち。

Leopard early adopters suffer for the rest of us

CNET の Tom Krazit が、早速 Leopard をインストールして様々な不具合に遭遇しているアーリーアドプターたちを皮肉っている。

Most Leopard users seem satisfied. But there have been a fair amount of complaints from those who were first down the road to Leopard. Most are relatively minor, some were quite annoying, and a few raise questions about how Apple’s operating system strategy might be different when it’s time to ship the next release.

First of all, the point I referenced in the opening: let’s give thanks to the early adopters, however masochistic they may be. You can do all the QA in the world before releasing an operating system, and it’s not going to compare to what happens when the unwashed masses get their hands on the product.

Unmet Expectations, No Switcher Equation

Another problem with Leopard is the unmet expectations. Apple, like Microsoft with Windows Vista, promised more than it delivered with Leopard, and even went so far as to promise secret new features that never materialized. It’s one thing to explain, as Microsoft did repeatedly with Vista, why certain features are being dropped; that’s just disappointing. It’s quite another thing, however, to brazenly promise secret features to a giggling crowd and then not deliver them and pretend the promise was never made. That’s pathologically dishonest and disillusioning.

But the biggest problem with Leopard is that it doesn’t really offer enough of an advantage over Vista to make anyone want to switch. For all the baloney news stories about Vista’s supposed problems, Microsoft’s latest operating system is actually a solid effort that finally closed the gap with Mac OS X. Leopard was Apple’s chance to once again leapfrog Windows, and given the five years of delays Microsoft put us through, it should have been a slam-dunk. That Apple was only able to come up with something that’s roughly as good as Vista is both surprising and telling, I think. Leopard just isn’t better than Vista. And it should be.

No matter. Leopard is an excellent product. Mac users will upgrade immediately or purchase new Leopard-based hardware with no regrets, and that’s just fine. But if you’re a Windows user sitting on the fence, Leopard doesn’t change the switcher equation at all.
