Safari Pad
Fred Volgelstein は Wired に大変いい記事を書いた。iPhone のスクリーンインターフェイスは、ある無名のタブレット PC プロジェクトにその源があった、と。「アップルのハードウェアエンジニアたちは、約１年かけてタブレット PC 用のタッチスクリーンテクノロジーを開発した。」同じことについて、今度はニューヨークタイムズのブロガー John Markoff が新しい証拠を挙げている。このプロジェクトの「コード名は Safari Pad」だったと・・・
In a well-written piece in Wired, Fred Volgelstein made mention that the iPhone’s touch screen interface had its roots in an unnamed tablet PC project. “Apple’s hardware engineers had spent about a year working on touchscreen technology for a tablet PC,” he wrote. Now there’s new evidence pointing to the same thing, as New York Times blogger John Markoff says that project was “internally dubbed Safari Pad.”

ニュートンの後継機
このマルチタッチ技術を Steve Jobs が iPhone や iPod touch のインターフェイスに採用したことははっきりしている。しかし「Safari Pad」プロジェクトについては、中止されたのか、単に中断しただけか、それとも密かに進行中なのか必ずしもはっきりしない。アップルは iPhone/touch がモバイル WiFi プラットフォームだと言い続けている。だからそのプラットフォームの一環として、より大きい、タブレットサイズのガジェットをアップルが開発中だとしても誰も驚かないだろう。Sculley に対する復讐心から Steve がニュートンをボツにしたという話は今や伝説だが、ニュートンのファンやガジェットおたくの連中は今でもその復活を熱望している。
While it’s clear that Steve Jobs tapped the multitouch tech for the iPhone’s and iPod touch’s interface, it’s not so clear whether the “Safari Pad” project was halted, merely paused, or continued in the background. Apple has consistently referred to the iPhone/touch as a mobile WiFi platform, and it would surprise no one were Apple to have a larger, tablet-sized gadget as part of that platform. Though the story of The Steve killing off the Newton as revenge on Sculley is legend, legions of Newton fans and gadget freaks have clamored for a resurrection ever since.

Kindle キラー
Markoff がいうところでは、このデバイスがもし出るとしたら「Kindle キラー」になるだろうという。Ｅブックリーダーというだけではアップルや Jobs のスタイルにはまったく適わないだろうというのだ。大きくて高解像度のスクリーンがあれば、Ｅブックの読書に大きく役立つが、同時にまた映画やビデオの鑑賞をすばらしい体験にもしてくれる。しかし私の考えるところはこうだ。iPod touch、より大きいスクリーン、MacBook Air の薄さ、Inkwell、最近特許出願したモードレスのマルチタッチ技術などが融合して、真の意味でのニュートンの後継機となり、Knowledge Navigator という夢にまた一歩近づくことになるだろう、と。
Markoff suggests this device, if it were to ever come out, will be a “Kindle-killer,” though to merely serve as e-reader would not be Apple’s or Jobs’s style in the least. A larger, high-resolution screen would no doubt make e-reading a great feature, but it would also make viewing movies and videos a much more immersive experience. I do see, however, a convergence of iPod touch, larger screen, MacBook Air thinness, Inkwell, and the modeless multi-touch tech of recent patent filings converging to make a true successor to the Newton, and bring much closer to the dream of the Knowledge Navigator.
