〈The Real Issue Between Apple and Google〉

Last week, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt received a lot of press as he stepped down from the board of Apple because it highlighted to the investor community that the two companies’ businesses were converging. This is true, on the surface, as both now have operating systems for smart phones and computers. However, there is one very stark difference in their strategies–Apple has created a different experience for mobile users while, to date, Google has not. And, as a result, investing in Apple is to invest in a secular growth trend, while investing in Google today is to invest in a business cycle recovery. Let me explain.

Apple’s ( AAPL – news – people ) iPhone applications deliver services that users want. Users “opt-in” by downloading applications on their iPhones that they want, and services are delivered by tapping an icon on their iPhone screen. This is a dramatic contrast, particularly on a mobile device, to searching for information or services. Think about it: Using an iPhone app, one can touch an application like OpenTable and make a dinner reservation. The alternative in a mobile environment is to go to your Internet browser on your phone, “Google” restaurants in your area, scroll down (if you can even read the microscopic text) and then call to make a reservation. Search is cumbersome on a mobile device. Delivery of desired information will change user behavior and expectations.

Native Client is an open-source research technology for running x86 native code in web applications, with the goal of maintaining the browser neutrality, OS portability, and safety that people expect from web apps. We’ve released this project at an early, research stage to get feedback from the security and broader open-source communities. We believe that Native Client technology will someday help web developers to create richer and more dynamic browser-based applications.

これはグーグルの Chrome OS 計画の一端なのだろうか。しかしそうではないかもしれない。グーグルの各チームの間でどれほどの調整が行われているのか不明だからだ。だがもしそうなら、Chrome OS は「単なるウェブアプリ」とはいえなくなる。Native Client は意欲的で興味深い。しかしネイティブの x86 コードはとても「ウェブアプリ」と呼べる代物ではない。

Could be this is part of Google’s plan for Chrome OS. But then again, maybe not — it’s unclear how much coordination there is across various teams at Google. But if it is, then so much for Chrome OS being “just web apps”. Native Client is ambitious and interesting, but native x86 code is a far cry from “web apps”.

（もし Native Client が x86 コードに限定されるということなら、Chrome OS で使われる可能性は消える。なぜなら、Chrome OS は ARM と x86 の両方のシステムで動くとグーグルがはっきりいっているからだ。追記：I/O プレゼンでのスライド 26 によれば、将来 Native Client を x86-64 および ARM に対応させる計画があるとグーグルがいっている。）

(And if Native Client is limited to x86 code, that would rule it out for use in Chrome OS, since Google has stated that Chrome OS will run on both ARM and x86 systems. UPDATE: According to slide 26 in this presentation from I/O, they plan to bring Native Client to x86-64 and ARM in the future.)

What happened? Very simply, human error. [...]

単純な人的ミスが原因です。

We periodically update that list [StopBadware.org criteria list] and released one such update to the site this morning. Unfortunately (and here’s the human error), the URL of ‘/’ was mistakenly checked in as a value to the file and ‘/’ expands to all URLs.

我々は定期的にこのリストの更新をしており、昨晩も新たに更新されたリストをリリースしました。誠に遺憾なことに単純な人為的ミスにより、この更新されたリストのなかに “/” というパターンが誤って混入していたため、全ての URL がこのパターンにマッチしてしまう、という事態が発生しました。

Carr は、その近著「The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google」の中で、コンピュータの未来における変化について論じている。劇的な変化のひとつは「クラウドコンピューティング」（cloud computing）への移行だ。そこではアプリケーションもファイルもすべて中央のスーパーコンピュータに保存されることになる。すなわちネットワーク上に保存されるということだ。エンドユーザーは自分のファイルにアクセスするのに、現在使っているような高度なコンピュータではなく、もっとスリム化したマシンを使うことになる。

In his new book “The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google,” computer industry writer and former executive editor of the Harvard Business Review Nicholas G. Carr discusses the changes he sees in the future of computing. One of the more dramatic changes is a shift to cloud computing — where applications and files are stored on a large, centralized supercomputer or network. The end user accesses his or her files using computers that are more streamlined but less sophisticated than today’s typical machines.

500 ドルを割り込む

今日も５％続落して、グーグル株は昨年８月以来初めて 500 ドルを割り込んだ。１２月末まで上昇が続き 700 ドルを超えていたことや、１１月には 750 ドルに手が届きそうで、みんな 1000 ドルもあり得るといっていたのが記憶に新しい。

Google has thus far today dropped another 5% of its stock price to drop below the $500 mark for the first time since last August. Remember, up until the final days in December the stock was still over $700 a share, and it was near the $750 a share level (with everyone talking $1000) back in November.

一体どうして？

かくも急速に下降に転じたのは一体どういうわけか。それらしき理由は三つほどある。

So what is it that’s caused such a rapid swing? Well it’s seemingly been 3 main factors:

１）ぱっとしない経済
２）初めての市場予想を下回る決算
３）マイクロソフトのヤフー買収提案

1) the crap economy
2) missed earnings for the first time
3) Microsoft trying to buy Yahoo

ちょっと予想を下回っただけなのに

これら三つの要因が絡んでいるにしても、かくも大幅に、かくも急速にグーグル株が下落するのはちょっと異常だ。

Yet even with those three major developments, it seems a bit odd that Google would fall so far so quickly.

確かにクーグルがウォール街の予想をわずかに達成できなかったのは事実だ。純収益は予想を下回って 6000 万ドルだった。前期より伸びてはいたけれど・・・。売上高が 33 億 9000 万ドルであることを考えれば、6000 万ドルなんて景気低迷のこの時期さして理不尽とは思えないような気がする。そもそもこんなに景気が悪くなるなんてアナリストすら予想しなかったのだから。純売上高は増えた。収益も増えた。AdSense の収益も増えた。それも大幅に増えた。なのにみんなパニックだ。

Yes, Google missed Wall Street projections of price per share – by one penny. Net revenue was off – of the projections – $60 million dollars, but still up. And when you consider the revenue was $3.39 billion dollar, $60 million doesn’t seem like an unreasonable amount to be off in a slowing economy that analysts no doubt didn’t anticipate to slow as much as it did. Net income rose, revenue rose, revenue from AdSense rose – and they all rose substantially. Yet still everyone is freaking out.

思い込みが現実を支配

これはある意味で思い込みが現実を支配するケースだと思う。今日現在のグーグルは、株価が 750 ドルだった１１月とさして変わりはない。たとえマイクロソフトのヤフー買収が実現しても、収入を生み出す検索とオンライン広告におけるグーグルの絶対的優位は揺るがない。

And so, in some ways we have a case of perception being reality. Google is really not much different today then they were in November when they were at $750. Even if a Microsoft purchase of Yahoo were to go through, Google would still have the absolute dominant position in both search and online advertising – where the money comes from.

たったひとつのこと

まさしく現在のアップルの状況とそっくりで・・・とても悪い。ただし、短期の投資家とっての話だが・・・

It’s a lot like the situation with Apple right now – bad…for short-term investors.

よっぽどグーグルがへまをしない限り、景気が悪化してもオンライン広告は伸びると考えられる。最近の急速な株価の下落は、たったひとつのことをみんなに指し示しているようだ。「買い」だ。

With online advertising still expected to grow despite a worsening economy, unless Google really messes something up in the next year, this rapid descent in stock price may just mean one thing for a lot of people: buy.

クリスマスになると北アメリカ航空宇宙防衛司令部（NORADR）が追跡するのはロシアのICBMばかりではないのをご存知だろうか。今年はGoogle（こちらは全世界に遍在して全知全能らしい）がNORADのサンタ追跡に力を貸している。

Russian ICBM’s aren’t the only thing the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) will be tracking this Christmas, and Google (which is everywhere, and knows everything) is giving them a hand.

結局グーグルの発表とは何だったのか、どの記事を読んでも大同小異でよく分らないが、ニューヨークタイムズの Saul Hansell の記事がとてもおもしろかった。

グーグルの新しい携帯 OS に関する Eric Schmidt の電話会議は、Steve Jobs の派手なキーノートとはまったく正反対だった。

Eric Schmidt’s conference call about Google’s new cell phone operating system was exactly the opposite of a showy Steve Jobs keynote.

Schmidt はすべてのことについて喋ったが肝心の新製品のクールな特徴については何にも語らなかった。というのもアンドロイドがハードな製品ではなく、オープンソースの電話ソフトに過ぎなかったからだ。

He talked about everything except the cool new features of the product. That’s because Android is not a product. It is open-source phone software.

どういうワケか、グーグルが発表すべきだった肝心のこと、すなわちアンドロイドのユーザーインターフェイスは来週まで公開されないのだ。電話のプロトタイプは確かに多くの記者に見せてはいたけれど・・・

Inexplicably, the one thing that Google does have to show—Android’s user interface—won’t be unveiled until next week. Google did show a phone prototype to a number of reporters.

今回のプロジェクトを率いる Andy Rubin について John Markoff がすばらしい記事を書いている。

かつてアップルで Quadra に携わったことがあり、また、Sidekick　を開発した男。ギークで事業家となかなか興味深い存在。

発表の中味だけでなく、その背景を掘り下げてまとめるところはさすが John Markoff・・・

今回の発表が携帯業界に与える影響、とくに iPhone に与える影響をいちはやく分析したのが Carl Howe だ。

新しい事態に直ちに対応できるのは、常日頃からアップルを追っている成果だろう。まさにアップルウォッチャーの面目躍如！
