今週末 Convert  が App Store のトップ 20 チャートに登り詰めたとき、我々は有頂天になったものだ。まだ触っていないならぜひ使ってみてください。みんなはユーザーインターフェイスがすごく気に入ってくれたようだ。次のようなレビューを見ると、うれしくてついニヤニヤしてしまう。

「アップルだって、こんなにうまくはやれないだろう・・・」

We’re ecstatic that Convert broke into the App Store top 20 this weekend after a fairly quick rush up the charts! Check it out if you haven’t done so yet. People really seem to be into the UI. My favorite reviews are the ones that include tidbits like the following excerpt… these put a huge grin on my face:

“Apple couldn’t have done it better had they tried.”

Within a couple hours of Bolt crossing the finish line, more than 100 new uploads showed up in YouTube search. Generally taped off TV sets, the screen captures vary drastically in picture quality and commentator language. But by following a Twitter, Facebook, watercooler or TV mention, millions of us will know today to jump over to our video sites of choice and watch Bolt crush. For an under-appreciated sport like track and field, that’s pretty cool.

Unfortunately the official Berlin World Championships site has only a side-show video section, with daily highlight reels and interviews with the athletes. But thankfully, the International Association of Athletics Federations — or whoever they’ve sold the international TV rights to — don’t seem to be too interested in rapid-fire copyright takedown notices. So the videos on YouTube may just stay up.

The vast majority of the value gets captured by aggregators linking and scraping rather than by the news organizations that get linked and scraped. We did a study of traffic on several sites that aggregate purely a menu of news stories. In all cases, there was at least twice as much traffic on the home page as there were clicks going to the stories that were on it. In other words, a very large share of the people who were visiting the site were merely browsing to read headlines rather than using the aggregation page to decide what they wanted to read in detail. [...]

Historically, the value of those casual browsers was captured by the newspaper because the readers would have to buy a copy. Now all the value gets captured by the aggregator that scrapes the copy and creates a front page that a set of readers choose to scan. And because creating content costs much more scraping it, there is little rational economic reason to create content.

新聞の凋落が伝えられて久しいが、コンテンツよりアグリゲータ、内容よりリンクだともとれる内容にはいろいろ反論がありそうだ。

勝手にリンクをはって・・・という根強い問題とも関係する。

Twitterユーザーについて:

携帯メールのような制限が多いメディアの利用はコミュニケーションスキルを上げるという研究もあるが、Twitterも同じような制限がある文字だけのメディアだ。その結果、日本のTwitterユーザーの平均年齢は意外に高く、10~20代ではなく、30~40代前半が中心となっている。

これは海外でも同じようである。現在のユーザーのイメージは、ある程度のITリテラシーがあり、高度な概念を操作に転じられる人といった感じである。また、海外ではユーザーの男女比は同じくらいであるが、日本では7割が男性となっている。

iPhone Twitter

その点でアップルの「iPhone」には面白い可能性がある。私もTwitterを始めてから、他のユーザーの強い勧めでiPhoneユーザーになったが、確かにiPhoneとTwitterはとても相性がいい。iPhoneなどパソコンより安価な端末を使って、ブログを書くのは面倒だけどTwitterなら楽しめるというユーザーをどれだけ取り込めるかが鍵になるのではないか。

When the government gets involved — the government that is already looking into Apple for its board of director issues (with Google), anti-competitive issues (with iTunes/iPod), and hiring practice issues (again, with Google) — you are naturally going to take things a little more seriously than you were before. The fact of the matter is that Apple had, and still has, a lot of problems with the App Store. They waited too long to fix them, and the situation started to get out of control. So it looks like Apple may have had to bring out the big guns to restore order.

9月イベントで発表される iPod touch の新価格はこうだ!

John Gruber が9月のアップルイベントで発表される新 iPod touch の価格を予想している。

ただしいささか手が込んでいて、9月15日に発表される Zune HD について書かれた記事の中でそれとなくほのめかしているのだ。

Zune HD が iPod Touch を目標にしていることは明らかだ。最大の欠点は Zune HD がメディアプレーヤでありウェブブラウザに過ぎないという点だ。アプリもゲームもない。iPod Touch の現在の価格にくらべて Zune HD の価格設定は悪くないように思える。しかしアップルが来月発表しようとしているカメラ搭載の新モデルに比べるとたいしたことはない。新 iPod Touch は 16/32/64 GB モデルがそれぞれ 199/299/399 ドルだ。

Clearly, the Zune HD is going to be compared to the iPod Touch. Its biggest shortcoming is that it’s just a media player and web browser; no apps, no games. The Zune HD prices look good compared to today’s iPod Touches, but not so much compared to the new camera-equipped ones Apple is set to announce next month (16/32/64 GB for $199/299/399).

Regardless, whatever this is or isn’t, I want this. I was unsure if the app model would be better or worse than running a version of regular OS X on the Apple Tablet, but I’m definitely leaning towards better recently. And after seeing this, I hope Apple is too.

The Real Issue Between Apple and Google

Last week, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt received a lot of press as he stepped down from the board of Apple because it highlighted to the investor community that the two companies’ businesses were converging. This is true, on the surface, as both now have operating systems for smart phones and computers. However, there is one very stark difference in their strategies–Apple has created a different experience for mobile users while, to date, Google has not. And, as a result, investing in Apple is to invest in a secular growth trend, while investing in Google today is to invest in a business cycle recovery. Let me explain.

Apple’s ( AAPL – news – people ) iPhone applications deliver services that users want. Users “opt-in” by downloading applications on their iPhones that they want, and services are delivered by tapping an icon on their iPhone screen. This is a dramatic contrast, particularly on a mobile device, to searching for information or services. Think about it: Using an iPhone app, one can touch an application like OpenTable and make a dinner reservation. The alternative in a mobile environment is to go to your Internet browser on your phone, “Google” restaurants in your area, scroll down (if you can even read the microscopic text) and then call to make a reservation. Search is cumbersome on a mobile device. Delivery of desired information will change user behavior and expectations.
