アップルが次期 iPod touch にカメラとマイクを搭載するというウワサで持ち切りだ。これで Skype アカウントがあれば自宅の電話回線とはすっかりオサラバだ。
Rumors have swirled about Apple readying a new version of the iPod Touch with a camera and microphone, which, combined with a Skype account, would pretty much obviate the need for a home phone line once and for all.

中国工場ではすでに製造中
事情通の話によれば、ウワサのタイミングもぴったりで、アップルの中国工場ではすでにカメラとマイクを備えた iPod touch モデルの製造にとりかかっているという。電話での質問に対しアップルのスポークスマンは回答を避けた。
A well-connected source tells us those rumors are on the money, and that Apple’s factories in China are already manufacturing iPod Touch models with integrated cameras and microphones. An Apple spokesman declined to comment when reached by phone.

注目の第３四半期（４～６月）の決算発表が行なわれた。

営業収入、営業収益ともアップ。売り上げ台数ではマックは微増、iPod は微減、iPhone は激増。
Revenue and profits are up, Mac unit sales are slightly up, iPod sales are slightly down, and iPhone sales are way way way up.
（決算報告の電話会議で、iPod Touch の売り上げは対前年比で増加したとアップルは語った。ということは、その他の iPod については大幅に減ったということだろう。通常アップルはモデル毎の iPod の内訳は明らかにしない。）
(On the conference call, Apple stated that iPod Touch sales are up year-over-year, so regular iPod sales must be way down. They don’t usually break out iPod sales by model.)

その Jobs が Coldplay のコンサートツアーに現われたらしい。
一連のニュースの元になったのが、ツアーを追っかけていた Roadie #42 の報告だ。
月曜夜のマウンテンビュー Shoreline Amphitheatre の様子をつぎのように書いている。

白状すると、今夜ボクにとって意味があったのは Steve Jobs がそこにいたということだけだ。ボクは根っからのアップルファン。いまの仕事をするのに Macbook Pro（それ以前は Powerbook）がないなんて想像もできない。こんなツールを造り出し、ボクらが使うことを可能にしてくれたのは Steve Jobs のビジョンがあったればこそだ。
“I’ll be honest with you folks, the only thing that mattered to me tonight was the presence of one Steve Jobs. I’m a confirmed Apple devotee and I really cannot imagine doing the job I do now (or even having got into this line of work) without my Macbook Pro (and all the Powerbooks that went before it). Steve が更衣室の前で Dave Holmes とおしゃべりしているのを見かけて、あこがれの大スターを前にしたティーンエイジャーみたいな気分になってしまった。あつかましくも彼に声をかけられるように苦いエスプレッソをグイと飲みこんだ。カフェインと安っぽいファンボーイの気分に助けられてなんとか口にできたのは「どうもありがとう」というひとことだけ。自分がバカみたい（？）なことに気づき、早々に彼の前から立ち去った。

App Store が初年度で 15 億ダウンロードを達成したとアップルが発表。そのプレスリリースに Steve Jobs が引用されている。
どうやら復帰後の Jobs の仕事は、プレスリリースに登場してアップルの本音を語ることらしい・・・

Native Client is an open-source research technology for running x86 native code in web applications, with the goal of maintaining the browser neutrality, OS portability, and safety that people expect from web apps. We’ve released this project at an early, research stage to get feedback from the security and broader open-source communities. We believe that Native Client technology will someday help web developers to create richer and more dynamic browser-based applications.

これはグーグルの Chrome OS 計画の一端なのだろうか。しかしそうではないかもしれない。グーグルの各チームの間でどれほどの調整が行われているのか不明だからだ。だがもしそうなら、Chrome OS は「単なるウェブアプリ」とはいえなくなる。Native Client は意欲的で興味深い。しかしネイティブの x86 コードはとても「ウェブアプリ」と呼べる代物ではない。
Could be this is part of Google’s plan for Chrome OS. But then again, maybe not — it’s unclear how much coordination there is across various teams at Google. But if it is, then so much for Chrome OS being “just web apps”. Native Client is ambitious and interesting, but native x86 code is a far cry from “web apps”.
（もし Native Client が x86 コードに限定されるということなら、Chrome OS で使われる可能性は消える。なぜなら、Chrome OS は ARM と x86 の両方のシステムで動くとグーグルがはっきりいっているからだ。追記：I/O プレゼンでのスライド 26 によれば、将来 Native Client を x86-64 および ARM に対応させる計画があるとグーグルがいっている。）
(And if Native Client is limited to x86 code, that would rule it out for use in Chrome OS, since Google has stated that Chrome OS will run on both ARM and x86 systems. UPDATE: According to slide 26 in this presentation from I/O, they plan to bring Native Client to x86-64 and ARM in the future.)

This, to me, gets to the heart of the revolution at hand. A decade ago, my first PowerBook was a secondary machine to the desktop anchored at my desk. Now, my main machine is my MacBook Pro, but it feels a bit like an anchor now. My mobile secondary computer is my iPhone.
