そうだ、知的財産に興味のあるみなさん、マイケル・ジャクソンは、1993 年に認可された米国特許第 5,255,452 号の３人の発明者のひとりにリストアップされている。「反重力的イリュージョンをつくり出すための方法と手段について」という特許だ。分りやすくいえば、「”Smooth Criminal” みたいに支え無しで重力に反する角度まで身体を傾けることを可能にする特別製のローファーで、ステージの床にあるスロットにフィットするかかとがついている靴」ということだ。
That’s right, intellectual property fans, Jackson is listed as the first of three inventors on United States Patent 5,255,452, granted in 1993 for a “method and means for creating anti-gravity illusion.” Translation: special loafers fitted with heels that can slot into the stage floor to allow the wearer to lean forward, Smooth Criminal style, at gravity-defying angles.

Steve Jobs は肝臓移植手術を受けたとウォールストリートジャーナル紙が報じている。
術後順調に快復中であり、６月末には復帰の予定だと云う。ナンバー２の比重が増すことになるのではないかとも伝えている。

This must be a deliberate, timed leak from Apple. The timing is simply perfect from Apple’s perspective — midnight on the Friday of what appears to be the most successful new product launch in company history.

What’s intriguing about this story is not the question of whether Jobs actually had a liver transplant. I do not doubt that (although I’d like to see better sources for it). What is intriguing is the question of who leaked this information to the Journal and why.

This third scenario is my best guess as to the Journal’s source. It sounds sensational to speculate that there is conflict in this regard between Jobs and at least some contingent of Apple’s board of directors, but sensational or not, it makes more sense to me than any other scenario.

Tim Cook の可能性はないと思う
In theory the Journal’s source could be Tim Cook, but that goes against everything I have ever heard about Cook. I believe him to be loyal, honest, and to have deservedly earned Steve Jobs’s full trust. I truly believe that Cook would much prefer to continue in his current role in an Apple with Jobs as CEO than to be CEO of a Jobs-less Apple. Plus, Cook doesn’t need to angle through the press for anything. If Jobs steps down as CEO any time in the foreseeable future, the CEO job goes to Cook. No one whose opinion I value doubts this. It’s simply a question of whether Cook runs operations as “COO” with Steve Jobs overseeing product development, or as “CEO” without Steve Jobs overseeing product development.

WWDCで最も日本の開発者がエキサイトしていた機能は、アプリ内課金だったと思う。
ただ僕個人としては、少なくとも現状の仕様のままでは、iPhoneにおいてアプリ内課金が成功するのはとても難しいと思う。

深津氏はその理由としてユーザー数のスケールが小さいことを挙げる。
そして従来の携帯アプリをそのまま iPhone に移植したプレイヤーがほぼ全員敗走していることも・・・

移植したプレイヤーはほぼ全員敗走
多分、定額課金による収入増加を見込んでいるプレイヤーの大半は、携帯市場とくに公式アプリ出身のプレイヤーが多いのではないかと思う。しかしiModeの場合、絶対的なユーザー数と、公式アプリという保護政策によって定額課金は機能していた感が強い（自分という部外者が観測にすぎないが）。 ユーザー数が少なく、そのうえに50000本のアプリが並列に展開される、AppStoreにおいて、従来の携帯アプリでのアプローチがそのまま成功するかどうかは大きな疑問だ。
従来の携帯アプリをそのままiPhoneに移植したプレイヤーがほぼ全員敗走している以上、携帯アプリの課金モデルをそのままiPhoneに翻訳したアプリを作っても、また惨敗するのではないか。すでに自前でコンテンツを持っている人が定額課金を考える場合は、もうちょっと楽だと思うけど、それでもペイするだけの初期ダウンロード数を確保できないのならば、やはり大した違いはでないのではないかと思う。

やっぱ国外出ようぜ
というように、スケール的な限界がある以上、アプリ内課金で利益を上げるには、前提として北米市場である程度のユーザーを確保しなければ話にならない。ところが、北米市場で2～3万本以上売り上げた国産アプリなど、数えるほどしかない。つまり結論としては、アプリ内課金をやってる暇があったら、それ以前に海外で販売できる力をつけることに専念すべきではないかと思うのだ。
どうせ日本なんてあと10年ぐらいで二流～三流国家に転落するのだから、体力のある今のうちに韓国とかフィンランドの国際展開のノウハウ盗んで頑張った方がいいんじゃないかと。国際展開、韓国やフィンランドにできて日本にできない理由もないんじゃないかな。

ここでも iPhone を従来のケータイの延長線上で考えるか否かがカギのように思える。
iPhone が日本に与えた衝撃とは、好むと好まざるとにかかわらず国際的物差しで考えざるを得なくなったことではないか・・・

外部デバイスとの連携がポイント
プッシュ通知機能やアプリ内課金も魅力ですが、iPhoneをいちばん面白くするのは外部デバイスとの連携が解禁されたことだと思います。
iPhoneと外部デバイスの通信は、電子機器にとって新しいコンセプトをもたらすと思います。ハードウェアとソフトウェアがより分離し、Amazon APIのようなウェブサービスやマッシュアップといった概念が、デバイスレベルに降りてくるわけです。
機能と設計をシンプルにし、仕様をしっかり公開さえすれば、電子機器はユーザーの用途に応じて無限のカスタマイズと進化ができる、というのはとても面白いと思います。このような概念が普及していくと、既存の家電が抱えていた問題点──アレもコレもと機能をゴテゴテと追加する風潮に一石が投じられるのではないかと思います。

このように外部デバイスへの連携を重視する背景には、深津氏が iPhone を電話でも家電でもない「あちら側」へのデバイスと捉えていることがある。

しかしi-podもituneもインターネットの手前の、グーグルを介さない「あちら側」へ扉で［ママ］となりうる。そしてアップルはそのゲートウェイの使用を自分以外にの誰にも許可していない。「こちら側」にバイパスを設けつつ「あちら側」を支配する、それがアップルの戦略なのではないのかなと思う。

iPhone は電話でも家電でもない
で結論としては、「iPhoneは携帯でも音楽プレイヤーでもない」という考えに帰結した。
タッチスクリーンという仕組みの本質は大画面の手段でも、カッコよさでもない。むしろUIとしては不便な部類に属するデバイスである。その唯一の利点は、あらゆるタイプのインターフェースを、１つのデバイスで実現できるということだ。

iPhone 進化の未来は・・・
iPhone自体は時代に比べて比較的ロースペックというスタンスを保ちながら、IDと万能リモコン、万能ハブというポジションに専念するのではないかと思う。
iPhoneはあくまで入出力機器に徹し、複雑な処理はネットワークや最寄りのPCにリクエストを出して結果を受け取る。wifi圏内に適切な対応デバイスがあれば、一覧をダイナミックに取得しUIをロード、独立したデバイスとデバイスをシチュエーションにあわせて組み合わせて制御する、マッシュアップのハブみたいなものになっていくだろう、と考えている。

日本のデベロッパによる WWDC 現場からのわくわくするようなレポートがある。
Cocoa プログラミング第一人者の息吹きが直接伝わってくるようで楽しい。

Snow Leopard
新規機能は、64 bit、Grand Central Dispatch (GDC)、OpenCL。このあたりは、有効に使うことができれば、アプリケーションの性能は飛躍的にアップする。でも、それには充分な知識が必要。アプリケーションデベロッパによって、開発力の差が出るかも。
値段は、Leopardユーザは$29。ここで会場、この日一番の大盛り上がり。この値段はインパクトあるわー。

iPhone OS 3.0
iPhone OS 3.0では、基本的にはすでに提供されている機能のおさらい。新情報としては、SMSで画像などを送ることができるMMSをサポートするキャリアの紹介。Softbank、あったー！あと、iPhoneをモデムとしてMacをインターネットにつなげる、ティザリング機能をサポートするキャリアの紹介。Softbank、なかったー！
そして、iPhone OS 3.0の提供開始日。6月17日。うーん、結構早いぞ！来週か！それまでに、あれやって、これやって。WWDC出ている場合じゃないぞ！

iPhone 3GS
そして、iPhone 3GS。ほぼ事前のリーク情報通りのため、会場からは大きな驚きはなし。
ハードウェアのバリエーションが増えるという事は、iPhoneプラットフォームの成長を考えると、必ず必要なもの。毎年、新しいモデルを投入することになるでしょう。開発者から見ると、様々な問題が増える。まず、パフォーマンスの問題。いくら新しいのが2倍速くなったといっても、それにあわせてアプリを作る事はできない。やっぱり、第一世代iPod touchで快適に動くというのが、パフォーマンスの目安になるでしょう。新しいデバイスのポテンシャルを活かす事はできない。
早い話が、手間が増えるっていうことですな。ま、これは宿命でもあるんだけど。あ、画面サイズが変わらなかったのは嬉しい。これがいちばんインパクトでかいからね。

全体の印象
今年はやっぱり、熟成の年のWWDC。Mac OS X、iPhone OSともに、事前に提供されているものがほとんどなので、驚きはなかった。新ハードとなるiPhone 3GSも、漸進的なアップデートといった印象で、すんなり受け入れられた。

あと、なんつーか感じたのは、あんまり技術に興味ないんじゃないの？ ということ。私はプログラマ上がりなんでWWDCに来ると、テクノロジーラブ！ GCD素敵！ OpenCLクール！ Objective-Cのブロック構文は美しさがないね！ って感じでテンションが上がる。でもその勢いで話すと、あれ？ こういう話興味ないすか。すいません。。。ってなっちゃった。うまくコミュニケーションとれねーよ。ジェネレーションギャップだ。技術系の話は、ジジイの繰り言のように、片隅でコソコソとやるのでした。
iPhone SDK登場して、1年経った。当初は単純なフレームワークだったのが、3.0ではCore Dataが使えたり、OpenGL SLまで使えたりして、結構複雑になってきた。ここからは、技術力、開発力の差が出てくると思うんだけどね。

米国時間月曜日に迫った WWDC で発表される iPhone 新モデルの名前は「iPhone Video」だそうだ。しかも即日入手可能だという。

月曜日の WWDC 2009 でアップルは iPhone Video を発表する。といってもみんなビックリしないよね。Walt Mossberg もいってるし、みんなそう思ってる。それに Palm Pre にも備えなきゃいけないし。
Apple will announce the iPhone Video at WWDC 2009 this coming Monday. That won’t be a surprise though, as many are expecting it, Walt Mossberg said it, and Apple needs to counteract the Palm Pre launch.
でもこれは知らないだろう。iPhone Video は即日入手可能らしいんだ。そう、次世代モデルの iPhone Video を月曜には手に入れることができるんだ。ただし、アップルストアが近くにあり、売り切れる前に行ければの話だけど・・・
What you don’t know, though, is that Apple will likely make the iPhone Video available the same day. Yes, you will be able to pick up the next version of the iPhone on Monday, if you get to an Apple Store before they sell out.

で、新しい iPhone Video の具体的内容はどうか。まず、8GB、16GB、32GB の三つのモデルがある。4GB モデルも製造中だが月曜には間に合わない。発売されるのもアップルストアじゃない。これまでいわれていたオートフォーカスカメラ、コンパスなどなどのウワサは全部ほんとだ。これまでの背面カメラだけでなく前面カメラもついてくるところがスゴい。自分自身は撮影できるけれど iChat ビデオはまだだ。それでもスゴいことだ。スピードアップしたプロセッサもこれまたスゴい。RAM を増やす話は聞こえてこないけれどそうかもしれない。
What will we see in the new iPhone Video? For starters, it will be available in 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB models. A 4GB model is in the works as well, but it won’t be available on Monday, and when it is released, it won’t be sold in Apple Stores. All the things youﾕve been seeing about an auto-focus camera, compass, etc. are all true. A camera on front along with a camera on back, that is the real deal – although it may just be for you to take video of yourself, and not for iChat video communication (although that would freaking rock.) A faster processor is also a lock (although I have heard nothing on additional RAM, it would make sense.)

いくつかのソースに当ったところでは、iPhone Video が月曜に発表されるのは間違いなさそうだ。当初７月発売予定だったので数は限られているらしい。ということは７月発売予定を前倒しにしたので数は十分でないということだ。いずれは十分な数が準備されるだろうけれど。
Talking to a few sources, it seems that the stars are in alignment for iPhone Video to launch this Monday. My understanding is that availability will be limited, because the plan was to launch in July. This means that Apple doesn’t have all the phones available now that they would have had in July for a launch – but you can expect regular replenishments of product.
