日経新聞から・・・
まるで天災のように
このたびの米国発の金融危機については、「百年に一度の危機」という表現が盛んに使われる。この表現は、「資本主義の世界では百年に一度くらいこの手の危機が起こるものであり、決して誰の責任という問題ではない」という雰囲気を醸し出すから、誰をも安心させる。米国のやり方をひたすら推奨してきた経済学者も評論家も皆悪くない。恐らく百年後にまた同じような危機が起こるだろう、と。まるで自然災害か地震に遭った時のようだ。「経済学が何を言っても同じこと」とも聞こえる。
なぜ米国発か
・・・加えて米国人は百年に一度の危機がなぜ米国発なのか自問する必要もあるだろう。
何度もなんども繰り返し
米国は貯蓄金融機関（S&L）の破綻危機に際して証券化という手法を開発したが、その住宅ローン危機を今回はさらに深刻な形で再現させた。LBO（借り入れで資金量を増やした買収）で散々使ったジャンク債の次は、今回の「ジャンク証券化商品」である。同じようなことを何度でも繰り返して、懲りることのない体質なのではないか。

1984 年は Paul Young にとって辛い年だったらしい。アメリカンツアーで声を痛めてしまった。「Everytime You Go Away」の大ヒットはその翌年のことだった。
この曲にはオリジナルがある。Paul Young はカバー（バージョン）なのだ。

Daryl Hall が作曲し、かつ歌っている。オリジナルは Hall & Oates の 1980 年のアルバム「Voices」に収録された。

若者が車をほしがらなくなった理由：
われわれが若者だった一九六〇年代の後半から一九七〇年代の前半、「自分一人の部屋」を確保できている若者は非常に少なかった。子供部屋というものを設けている家庭もあったが、そこには必ず「兄弟」がいた。団塊の世代とは兄弟のいる世代なのである。
こうした住宅環境において、車は「動く部屋」として機能した。車に乗り、ドアを閉めてしまえば、そこは自分一人だけの宇宙であった。この「一人だけの宇宙」として車は強く欲せられたのである。・・・
ひるがえって、二十一世紀の状況を見るとどうだろう？ 子供の多くは一人っ子であり、子供部屋を持たない子供はほとんどいない。「一人だけの宇宙」は「すでに確保」されているのである。おまけに、子供部屋の中にはヴァーチャルに空間を無限拡大できるゲームやパソコンが備えつけられている。そうした子供が大人になったとき、家の外に、さらに「一人だけの宇宙」を求めるだろうか？
もう一つ付け加えれば、車の運転を覚えるという「新しい試練」に対する脅えがある。いまの若者は、運転を覚えることすら「かったるい」と感じているのだ。
いずれも若年人口の減少がもたらした現象である。ゆえに若年人口が回復しないかぎり車の国内需要は回復しない。これは確定的真理なのである。

預金保護にあたる FDIC［Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation：連邦預金保険公社］の実際がテレビ番組になった。
最近のご時世ということか・・・
シティのような大手は、規模からいっても、off-shore operation、foreign deposits などがあることから対象に出来ない（納税者のカネで対応するよりほかない）という Sheila Bair の発言が印象的。

EULA の問題点
Let us imagine that I have two computers on the desk, and that I have bought two copies of OSX in the retail store. These machines have pretty much the same components, however one was bought from Apple, though I have replaced the hard drive, and the other was self assembled.
I boot from the bought copy on each machine, and now comes the interesting part. The copies will install in the same way on both machines. On both machines I am presented with a EULA. This EULA is a second agreement. The first agreement I entered into was with the store, and it was a purchase agreement for a copy of OSX. Now I am being asked to enter into a new and different agreement, independently of the first, with Apple. This agreement will among other things restrict what I install the copy on.

サブプライム問題の本質をズバリ
過去の実績をベースとするモデル（history-based models）について投資家は疑いの目を持つべきだ。頭のいい専門家連中がベータ、ガンマ、シグマといった難解な用語を駆使して構築するモデルは確かに見事な印象を与える。しかしそれらの記号が意味するものの背後にある前提を投資家はしばしば忘れ勝ちだ。金融ギークが作った公式には注意せよ。それが我々からのアドバイスだ。
Investors should be skeptical of history-based models. Constructed by a nerdy-sounding priesthood using esoteric terms such as beta, gamma, sigma and the like, these models tend to look impressive. Too often, though, investors forget to examine the assumptions behind the symbols. Our advice: Beware of geeks bearing formulas.

自分の過ちを認める謙虚さ
この報告書の前半で、昨年私が手数料について（あるいはそれ以外についても；とにかく突出し過ぎた）大きな過ちを犯したことを述べた。Charlie［Charlie Munger：Berkshire のパートナー］からも誰からも要請があったわけではないのに、石油やガスの価格がピークのときに私は ConocoPhillips の株を大量に購入した。エネルギー価格が年の後半にこれほど劇的に下落するとはまったく想像もしなかった。私は今でも石油が現在の 40 ないし 50 ドルより遥かに上昇する確率は高いと信じているが、これまでのところは完全に間違っていた。加えて、価格が上昇するにしても、ひどいタイミングで購入したことにより Berkshire に数十億ドルの損害を与えてしまった。
I told you in an earlier part of this report that last year I made a major mistake of commission (and maybe more; this one sticks out). Without urging from Charlie or anyone else, I bought a large amount of ConocoPhillips stock when oil and gas prices were near their peak. I in no way anticipated the dramatic fall in energy prices that occurred in the last half of the year. I still believe the odds are good that oil sells far higher in the future than the current $40-$50 price. But so far I have been dead wrong. Even if prices should rise, moreover, the terrible timing of my purchase has cost Berkshire several billion dollars.
